What's the best backpack for traveling? Here's the story of my backpack

Hey all, i will be writing about the history of my backpacks.
I've read somewhere that backpacks are making a comeback. I say it never left. Maybe for a time when everyone i know has been toting a messenger bag. But for travelling, i never used a messenger bag, maybe a sling bag to hold the most important stuff, but often times its the backpack i carry with me wherever i go. From shopping to walking around the city, to restaurants and even bars and clubs. I have one with me for the past three of four years. Its a nike iPod bag

I love Lonely Planet Thailand

Latest Purchase: Lonely Planet Thailand

Probably the most popular guide book of Lonely Planet for the simplest reason that almost everyone goes to Thailand. I've been to Thailand nearing my third time this February and i told myself why haven't i bought Thailand's guidebook. And so off i did, ordered online through one bookstore and after a few days i got this book. I'm done lurking on websites, blogs, online forums.. its time i get myself well informed via Lonely Planet. It does serve its purpose of giving the most handy tips traveling' around Thailand from accommodations to must see sights, alternative routes, etc.. So this will be the book i will be reading for the month of January.

The year of living dangerously

Early this morning i was able to watch this film on TCM, a cable channel showing really old films here in the Philippines. The movie is called "The year of living dangerously". The movie stars as the very young Mel Gibson and Sigourney Weaver. Its about the story of a foreign journalist caught in the middle of chaos in Jakarta, Indonesia. Political drama, socio-economic drama, and an undying love story between two people set in the most absurd location.

A Love Caught In The Fire Of Revolution
"Guy Hamilton is a journalist on his first job as a foreign correspondent. His apparently humdrum assignment to Indonesia soon turns hot as President Sukarno electrifies the populace and frightens foreign powers. Guy soon is the hottest reporter on the story with the help of his photographer, half- Chinese dwarf Billy Kwan, who has gone native. Guy's affair with diplomat Jill Bryant also helps. Eventually Guy must face some major moral choices and the relationship between Billy and him reaches a crisis at the same time the politics of Indonesia does." Written by Reid Gagle

World's friendliest countries

#1 is Bahrain

For making friends its the United States, Spain, Canada and Australia

For making LOCAL friends its Bahrain, Singapore, Hong Kong, Thailand

For finding somewhere to live its Australia, Singapore and the United States.

The Expat Explorer survey was commissioned by HSBC Bank International and conducted by the research company FreshMinds. More than 3,100 expatriates were surveyed between February and April 2009.The respondents were asked to rate 23 factors related to their quality of life, including food, entertainment, transportation, health care, finances, education and their ability to make friends. Each criterion is equally weighted to arrive at a score. The overall ranking is based on the average score for a country across the criteria. Eight measures were also selected to comprise the integration score: organizing school for my children; organizing my finances; organizing my health care; finding somewhere to live; making friends; making local friends; setting up utilities; and joining local community groups. The integration score was used to determine the friendliest countries.

The noodle family in Phnom Penh, Thailand

Let me tell you a short story set in Phnom Penh about the most wonderful family i've met in my travels abroad. They are called the Noodle Family. My friends coined their name because they are the family that serves right in front of you fresh, hot and really tasty noodles. They are found in the big street leading to the ghetto district in the lake side. The other end of the mosque. I will ask for the directions again. If in case you're in Phnom Penh, do visit them. I highly recommend it.

Almost everyday and night, this is the place we go to for cheap but tasty food. Adam introduced me to this place. We would order noodles, mine's the egg fried noodles which is really really good and a can of anchor beer for less than $1. As i see them, i couldn't help but wonder what this particular family has on me. Whenever i'm here, i feel like my my mom's cooking me something and my dad's talking to me while my brother and sisters are playing around. Everyone works, the dad cooks, the mom with the girls chop those vegetables and meat, the older brother grabs softdrinks and beer from the other store, the little boy serving me the spoon and fork. And whenever they hand me out something or looks at me, they're always smiling.

Since july, i always think about them. I wonder how they've been. I wish they celebrated the holidays in good spirit. I hope their mini eatery and restaurant will flourish into a full blown restaurant. They are the sweetest pictures of khmer people. I hope on my next visit to Phnom Penh that they are still where they are because i will hang out with them for sure. I wanted to take a photo of each and every one of them.

I wanted to share this story to all of you who're looking for magic in Phnom Penh. In, let's say fastpaced city as Phnom Penh with all the dirt, you can still find a pure heart in one of the walkways. This is the only photo i took in one of the afternoons strolling, i was looking for a good place to eat. I always wind up dining here. Just lovely.

Top ten most unforgettable travel adventures in Cambodia

As i end my blog series on Cambodia, i would like to share to you my dear readers, my top ten most unforgettable experiences of my journey to the kingdom of Kampuchea.. The Cambodia.

I hope this may spark your curiosity even more to visit this awesome country on your next backpacking trip around South East Asia. I hope in the coming years the country will prosper as a nation, a feat it truly deserves. But on the other hand, i hope westernization will not kill the rich culture of this truly great nation.

China unveils world's fastest train link

Wow and i thought riding the Maglev train in Shanghai at more than three hundred kilometers per hour was the most nauseating experience because you don't want to look at the window when you're inside. It's really fast, somehow people, objects turn into colors. Then on the news, China unveils yet another fast train, this time the fastest in the world. I don't know about you, but i think there should be a fast train from Shanghai to Beijing to Central China because i've been meaning to do this route for the longest time. I just went to Shanghai.

China unveils 'world's fastest train link'

BEIJING (AFP) – China on Saturday unveiled what it billed as the fastest rail link in the world -- a train connecting the modern cities of Guangzhou and Wuhan at an average speed of 350 kilometres (217 miles) an hour.
The super-high-speed train reduces the 1,069 kilometre journey to a three hour ride and cuts the previous journey time by more than seven and a half hours, the official Xinhua news agency said.

Work on the project began in 2005 as part of plans to expand a high-speed network aimed at eventually linking Guangzhou, a business hub in southern China near Hong Kong, with the capital Beijing, Xinhua added.

"The train can go 394.2 kilometres per hour, it's the fastest train in operation in the world," Zhang Shuguang, head of the transport bureau at the railways ministry, told Xinhua.
Test runs for the service began earlier in December and the link officially went into service when the first scheduled train left the eastern metropolis of Wuhan on Saturday.

By comparison, the average for high-speed trains in Japan was 243 kilometres per hour while in France it was 277 kilometres per hour, said Xu Fangliang, general engineer in charge of designing the link, according to Xinhua.
Beijing has an ambitious rail development programme aimed at increasing the national network from the current 86,000 kilometres to 120,000 kilometres, making it the most extensive rail system outside the United States.

China unveiled its first high-speed line at the time of the Beijing Olympics in 2008 -- a service linking the capital with the port city of Tianjin.
In September, officials said they planned to build 42 high-speed lines by 2012 in a massive system overhaul as part of efforts to spur economic growth amid the global downturn.

The network uses technology developed in co-operation with foreign firms such as Siemens, Bombardier and Alstom.

South East Asia's throbbing nightlife capital: Phnom Penh

Phnom Penh at Night

I'll try to make this entry as wholesome as possible.

If you're a single guy and have been to Phnom Penh you know what i am saying. If not, here's a 101 on you.
Phnom Penh as they say gets more alive when day turns into night. A night of bliss, pleasure and immeasurable moments of cheers and laughter. Phnom Penh at night is a good place to meet people, enjoy conversations, hook up with someone, end the night happy. Unlike in Bangkok where there's just too many people smacked in the city, Phnom Penh is still relatively a huge place to roam around and not bump into a fellow lonely soul. But whatever your liking is, this city will surely take your breath away.

Why all backpackers head to Phnom Penh City, Cambodia

Phnom Penh City... I love this City...

I remember always uttering this line after coming back from my trip to Phnom Penh last July 2009. Phnom Penh until now is hard for me to describe. I don't know if i like it or i hate it. Let's see after i write this story here. It's funny because this city is where i stayed the longest en route to the Mekong. For almost two weeks i was just here, walking around, doing crazy stuff, just talking to people. I will tell the story later. For now, some bits and information about Phnom Penh!

republ1c shop

A few days ago, i went craaazy going to this store called R3publ1C, a specialty water sport and accessories shop that sells shoes from Supra those hi-cut ones in flashy Kanye West colors, caps from RVCA that spells LA cool, Anon sunglasses those that fit perfectly, board shorts, t-shirts even limited edition wapakman tees, and those damn epic Burton bags. Those burton bags really caught my eye. As i needed a new backpack to carry with me for my backpacking trip in February. I already bought one of those cheap snowboard sunglasses that have polarized lenses for about P250 or $5. Nice!!! So for Filipinos out there looking for a great place to shop for anything you might need on a wake boarding trip to Camsur, or a jet ski escapade in Subic, or maybe like me a backpacking expedition somewhere remote, buy the essentials from this store. I highly recommend it.

So i think i will be going back to the store real soon just in time for the holidays and here's what i will buy..
-Burton bag
-those kitschy towels
-MAYBE Skull Candy earphones
-couple of tees

Billabong North Shore December 2009

I have a problem with my balance. I let you in on a secret. The only time i dated a board was when i tried skim boarding with the local kids on the far north of Boracay's white beach. An hour later, i was walking with a twister ankle. But i couldn't feel bad, it was one of the most liberating feelings in the world. Letting yourself swim via a board.

So when i saw this post from Billabong Surfing Championships. I couldn't be more excited, to try it out, sometime soon. The last few waves was just unbelievable. Good gracious!!!

Guys if you're in Manila try to drop by in this event. I heard there's an exhibit going on in Greenbelt 5 that will showcase the immense beauty of Camarines Sur and the Caramoan Islands. If you still don't know it yet, this island is where the French survivor series filmed their latest season. And it is also my next to go place South of Manila.

Here's a photo set by one of the greatest photographers ever..
Jun de Leon captures the early morning of Caramoan Island, inspired and reminiscent of a Juvenal Sanso. “Photographs capture a precise moment in a still image. How you take the subject the second you click on your shutter will not be the same the second after. There are numerous moments to be captured in such a breathtaking island.”

His photos will be exhibited in the event which will run till from now. Go and admire!!!

In the mood for love Angkor Wat scene

One of the REAL reasons why i went to the Angkor Wat complex was because of this movie called In the mood for Love, it's Wong Kar-Wai's finest masterpiece ever. It's the story of a man and woman, committed but is intertwined by the deception of their partners. It's the story about undying love and passion between two souls who'll never forget each other.

During the last scene, Tony Leung's character goes to Angkor Wat and finds a spot, it is where he disclosed his deepest and darkest secrets and emotions, and this is his love for Maggie Cheung's character. I've always wanted to that because of the heartaches of my past. And i did.

If this scene is not beautiful, i don't know what is. Bravo!!!

Lonely Planet Unpacked

I bought this book called "Lonely Planet: Unpacked" when i was in Saigon, Vietnam for cheap. Don't ask me where. Anyway, this lonely planet edition is a good book because it narrates the different stories of travelers/lonely planet writers in their journeys across the globe, some funny, others traumatic, but everyone has a weird story to tell right. Makes you want to still travel the world but with a big caution. Buy this book and you'll be opened up with the different mistakes/mishaps while traveling. So the next time your flight is delayed you won't think its the worst experience ever.

The best beach in Cambodia: Backpacking Sihanoukville

So i had a few more days to spare before i head to Phnom Penh for a while so i asked my good friend to join me to go the beach. Here's the schedule.
I wouldn't miss traveling' without heading for some beach action. Get set. Go. Book our bus again via Mekong Express onwards to Sihanoukville. Just in case you're coming from anywhere its best to jump start your trip to Sihanoukville via Phnom Penh as the bus we rode from Siem Reap stopped for a bit to head to Sihanoukville.

Tips on how to survive the trip to Angkor Wat

One of the only reasons, if not the only reason why people go to Siem Reap is to visit the Angkor complex. To tell you honestly, i am bad at Asian history. I didn't listen to my college professor, i wish i did so to tell you i have very little idea of Angkor Wat is an understatement. But i did my research before i left, i was told that the Angkor complex is such a vast, huge location combination of more than a hundred temples mostly hundreds of years ago.

The beautiful Khmer dancers: Apsara Traditional Dance in Siem Reap, Cambodia

So as they say no trip to Cambodia is complete without watching a traditional Khmer dance called Apsara. I've researched about it and this is what the dance is all about. Below are some of the photos i took of the traditional dance i saw with my friends while enjoying our dinner one night in Siem Reap, Cambodia.

Why travel to Cambodia's cool, chill-out city, Siem Reap: Gateway to the famous Angkor Wat

Siem Reap, Cambodia
"The name Siem Reap literally means "Siam Defeated". These days, however, the only rampaging hordes are the tourists heading to the Angkor Archaeological Park. This once quaint village has become the largest boom town and construction site in Cambodia. It is quite laid-back and a pleasant place to stay while touring the temples. It is a nice compromise between observing Cambodian life and enjoying the amenities of modern services and entertainment, thanks to a large expatriate community." As Wikitravel says.

Angel Locsin is popular in Cambodia!

i let you on a secret... Back when i was in Phnom Penh killing time after eating dinner, waiting for 8pm to hang out with my friends in one of the sleazy bars, this is what i do. Actually, whenever i go backpacking like in Bangkok, Koh Pha Ngan and Shanghai.. when i feel lonely, and miss the Philippines and all.

Step 1: Go to an internet shop
Step 2: Log on to YouTube
Step 3: Type Angel Locsin asap
Watch her dance. And I'm a happy man after. When i was working for abs-cbn. I would often see her in person. She's simple and really charming. I like her a lot. Mind you Khmer people were watching with me at the back i didn't know. They were smiling like crazy. They must really love Angel Locsin!

This is a simple tip to all lonely backpackers traveling the world. lol :)

Top ten essential experiences in Saigon, Vietnam

So for those of you wondering what is up for you when you visit Saigon "Ho Chi Minh City" Vietnam, i've made a list of 10 essential experiences you have to try/do when you're in the city. Of course apart from the casual Mekong river trip and trekking towards hills and tribes, here's a few I'm sure you can do when you go.

1. Watch the City.
This may sound vague but to capture the essence of Vietnamese life, take a look around at the people: the faces, the smiles, the gestures and then the places and scenery, there's so much to look at than your book. Take a walk. Breathe fresh air. Buy fruits. Sit with the locals in cafes and try to mingle. It's always a great joy for me when i talk to the locals. Makes me feel more at home.

2. Drink "Saigon Beer".

Its brewed taste. Its intoxication after. The effect when you're talking to beautiful Vietnamese. The joy of sharing a beer with your friends. Talking. Laughing. Sharing stories. I don't know about you but i love happy hour. Late afternoon drinking rocks! Cool and Chilled out.Cheers!

3. Go2 bar
GO2bar is a really cool place to hang out when you're in Saigon. Beers aren't cheap here, but you're paying for the ambiance. Right stuck in the middle of the busy intersection, is the best party place in town. You can watch as the day turns into night, people walking around, plus you can meet a lot of people here too.
A happy crowd. A happy night.
Upstairs there's a club that plays house and pop tunes so you can party the night away like i did as soon as i touched down Saigon. Beers for about $2, cool music, on the second floor. A few floors up is the rooftop, same thing--chill out deck drinking beer! It's a breezy night for a lonely man, if you know what i mean.

4. Do something wild.
I think one of the wildest things i did was put on a giant snake around my neck. Only in Vietnam, my friend! My friend drank snake wine. I was taking care of my stomach, my mistake when i was in Siem Reap. But for free, you can do this essential experience when you get to your first stop during the Mekong River Tour.
Don't sleep. I didn't sleep for a day. After arriving in Saigon midnight, i headed straight to the bar for a few drinks. The only way to party in Saigon!
Speedboat cruise. Take photos! Ask someone to take your photo while cruising the Mekong river on speed.

5. Cross the street.
There's a particular trick that i follow. Walk just right, not too slow or motorbikes will honk on you, not too fast or you'll be hit. And never ever stop. That's when accidents happen, actually.

6. The police
So after going to the Pagoda we decided to walk around, lo and behold, we got lost. We were walking on the streets were lingerie is everywhere and we're starving. My friend Cara went up to the police and asked "Where am i?" And the police answered... "You're at the mall!" It's funnier when i tell you the story in person. How can you beat that.

7. Vietnamese Dong
With a couple of five hundred thousands and fifty thousands, buddy when you're in Vietnam, you're a millionaire. Ask for a beer, ask how much? roughly 80,000 dong!

8. Raw meat.
Photobucket
Raw meat is what you find in the market like this. Literally and figuratively. A lot of Vietnamese girls are out during the night, dressed up, fully made up, waiting to service you for the lack of a better and more appropriate term. Massages, etc. It's up to you what you do. Been asked many times, i just think about it.

9. Don't mess with the Cyclo man.
It's history. But let's get real, it takes way too long. And don't even think about taking a photo. Just a photo opportunity with the cyclo man, he wanted to charge me for about $5. WTF.

10. And of course, the friends you meet along the way.
The boat to the Mekong river with the tour guide haha
Go2 bar roof deck, five floors up. Saigon beer. Fun conversations.
Sarah/ Me/ Cara/ yoshi (on top)/ Adam/ Two girls of Eat.Pray.Love( Ed. Before the movie)/ Melissa/Summer

The travel book: A journey through every country in the world

I vow to buy many a great selection of Lonely planet books. For someone like me who loves to travel, i bought the book THE TRAVEL BOOK: A JOURNEY THROUGH EVERY COUNTRY IN THE WORLD. For about P1000 or roughly $20+ you can get this book through Amazon or your nearest bookstore.

A good coffee table book, a bedside table book good for flipping through some countries every now and then so i get a little bit of information about certain destinations that i want to go to in the near future. Some of my favorites include Afghanistan, of course the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Fiji, Samoan Islands etc.
