Travel Diary: Exploring the Capital of the Queen City of the South - Cebu, Philippines

ALL-TIME FAVORITE POST FROM 2010 RE-BLOGGED:
Walking in Cebu is hectic. Hectic in a sense that there's so much to see, and with so little time, everything becomes too overwhelming. Cebu city is located in the eastern coast of mainland Cebu in Southern Philippines. With a rich Spanish influence and a laid back charm of province life, Cebu is a prime choice for tropical living in the country. Dubbed as the commercial hot spot of the south, boasting an international airport, progressive trade and industry business and scenery that will fickle all the senses.

The trip to Cebu was planned, months actually before the flight. I mean, I've been around Guimaras and Antique but i haven't been to Cebu. It's about time! I wanted to go to this island north of the province (watch out for this post) and it's inevitable that i make a quick stop to the city first.

Lonely Planet says i had to walk about five hundred meters from the Arrival doors of Cebu International Airport. I got myself a taxi which i paid for about P350 or roughly $7, very expensive i know. Immediately, i got myself my first chat with a local. With relatively no Cebuano blood and having no knowledge of Bisaya, surprisingly, it was a good conversation.

The taxi driver asked me if i was from Manila. I said yes. He asked me if i was a movie star? Huh? It must be the sunglasses and the three page white bond paper i was holding (It's part of work). He must be thinking i was in Cebu for a shoot.

I love this province already. Hellsyeah!

Cebu city was scorching hot when i was arrived. I felt every drop of perspiration. It was hot, humid and polluted. I didn't care. I actually wanted to ride public transportation but i think it was impractical, and i was running late.

For about few days in the city, i found myself wandering around and finding myself at the end of the road. I walked some more and it was dead end. I walked around Osmena Boulevard and the outskirts, and i found myself staring at a dilapidated building. How could this be? Where's that Cebu charm everyone's raving about. Maybe, i was in a totally different place? Or maybe i am just clueless!

Cebu City is comparable to Manila but i didn't want to compare the two because each city has its own charm. Manila is like a man. Cebu City is like a woman. Men are from Mars, women are from Venus. Totally different!

Cebu city boasts of high rise building and super malls. There's tons where to waste your money. Progression is part of the city's growth. With thousands of businessmen flying to the city day and night everyday, for the rest of the year, it's right about time Cebu city keeps up.

As a traveler, i found myself sometimes sitting in some unknown sari-sari store and ordering a bottle of "Coke sakto", as i puff a smoke, i looked around and slowly see the real charm of the city. I gaze upon the locals while i was riding the jeepneys transfering to and from, with number signs i couldn't understand and the sweltering midday sun spiking up. Imagine.

With absolutely nowhere to go and with enough time to wander some more, my days were spent cruising through the streets at the back of a motorcycle. Being the loner that i am, i go eat alone at one of the food courts in the largest mall in Cebu and just taking it all in.

If you're single guy and foreign looking, chances are you will find the city a disneyland of beautiful people. Gorgeous and tanned - Cebuanas strutting along the boulevard like a runway model. You will know where to go when you want to, what you were thinking.

Indeed, i came here searching to find answers why everyone's raving about Cebu, instead i got myself asking so many questions. I couldn't tell if i liked it or i hated it. The hell you might care what i maybe thinking, right?

And i have no regrets visiting the city, at least it's a place new to me.

3 White Sandy Beaches, An Enigmatic Lake and A Sutokil to Death in Camotes Island, Cebu, Philippines

ALL-TIME FAVORITE POST FROM 2011 RE-BLOGGED: In such a beautiful province such as Cebu, it's not surprising to discover hidden/not so hidden gems. Camotes Island will surely electrify all your senses. My trip to the islands was more laid back; listening to soothing music as the ferry boat rips the Camotes sea while in between, i doze off like a little baby. Believe me when i say this, as soon as i was dropped off by the motor driver to my destination, my jaw dropped, my stomach started having those cliche butterflies, and i was bound to discover more. I am literally in a delightful place i am proud to say, i have visited.

If the beaches of Camotes aren't world class, i don't know anymore what is. In such a beautiful island, i started wondering where the hell are the tourists. This place is something they could go back to over and over again, and never get tired of. I've been around Asia and have discovered the best of what our neighboring countries have to offer but nothing is really at par with our beaches. I am not saying this because i'm Filipino but i am saying this because it's simply beautiful. You have to go there!

5 minutes after i dropped off my backpack and started changing to my swimwear, i was already in paradise. This is the beachfront of Mangodloong Rock Resort in Heminsulan, town of San Francisco which is just beside the resort where i am staying. I told myself, i could literally spend the whole day doing absolutely nothing here, and feel more rewarded than ever.

After a bit of swim, and two bottles of San Miguel, i was more than excited to see the rest of Camotes Island beaches. As they say, the best was still to come. Imagine my excitement when i was told, there's more to come. 1 beach down, 2 more to go!

It was nearing lunch time, and i fancy going somewhere where there's food and drinks. The efficient moto-driver pointed me at Santiago beach in San Fran - The Pride of Pacijan island. Yes, apparently the people of Camotes love to call this municipality as San Fran. Slang much? He told me i have to see it to believe it.

When i got there, i told myself. This isn't real. It's the biggest and widest beach i've ever visited in my entire life. The best part is, i could literally count in my fingers the number of people i've spotted. Where in the world is everyone? This is surely looking good. The beach is so huge, i actually had to ride the motor in order to get across the area where there's food. I stopped by and ordered an iced-cold San Miguel Pale Pilsen. Classic and absolutely wonderful on a hot sunny day.

After relaxing for bit, we sped away again, this time to where no one's really there. I dared the motordriver to take me to a beach where there's no one in sight and the most beautiful of them all. At first, he wanted to bring me to some beach (i forgot the name) where some resorts are strategically located. I begged off because the last thing i want is convenience and modernity. I want a beach where i could feel as if i was transported back in time and where money is non-existent and time, irrelevant.

I never knew such a place could exist, until i was dropped off in the middle of the plush jungle. The steps leading to the beach was as exciting as it could get. Tucked by huge coconut trees and a handful of old nipa huts and dilapidated boats is Bakhaw beach.

I wanted to put into words how i felt the very moment my eyes laid on this beach, but i couldn't. With absolutely no soul in sight, and the waves crashing as the only sound i hear. I was deafened by this gorgeous beach. It was nearly perfection, i must say.

I had to go back the next day with my friends. I was all praises for this beach that i told them, this is the REAL thing. When we got there the next day, we spent where what is now known to us as one of the greatest beach ever.

The clearest waters, the finest sands, and no annoying tourist in sight - I am happy to announce that this is probably one of my greatest achievements in my life. I've never felt so tantric in all of my travels. How i love Cebu for nestling this paradise. After three awesome beaches, it's time to head to one enigmatic lake.

The air of mystery here is just so palpable. Lake Danao is an enormous lake, still in San Francisco The beauty of this lake is preserved and maintained. There are paddle boats available for rent and you can even eat your feast while slowly floating  across this vast area of fresh water. What's not to be missed? The small island within the lake. Beat that!

There were kids swimming and all i could think of is how blessed these kids are for having the best playground in the world.

Because Camotes Island is relatively flat, the best place to view the sea is from one of the highest viewing points where travelers can go, the Bohoc Rocks and Cliff. After walking the stairs down, I was bound to get an amazing view of the sea. As the kids begin their dives, i felt 35% excited but 65% nauseous. Did i jump?

I didn't. I don't want to make excuses but really, i don't want to disrupt the joys of these kids. They all look at me and expected me to jump as i already put my bags on the floor and took of my shirt off. I felt as if i owe it to them to let them play and be kids. I had already my chance.

It's hard for me to pinpoint what makes Camotes Island so beautiful. Is it the beautiful beaches? Really? Because, well, it's impossible to miss this on the list. But the real essence of traveling for me is making choices that i know i won't regret in the future. I sure feel as if time is my enemy here because a few weeks more of stay here will probably make me realize this place has everything i've always wanted. I am proud to have visited Camotes and i will live to tell the story to those who haven't visited yet.

This lifetime will be incomplete if you've not visited this place.

7. Realizing it's all in the mind in Enrique Villanueva, Siquijor

It's just so sad, that it took a Swedish family, two Dutch guys, two American girls, and a couple more Northern Europeans to make me realize how blessed i am to have visited Siquijor.

I got to chat with a lot of them, after they finished playing gate ball. Dagman was kind enough to treat us all for a couple of big grandes of Gold Eagle and San Miguel Beer. It was a good talk, getting to know them, and how long have they been staying. I've also met the family who's been in Siquijor for ten days now. From that chat, i just realized one thing. All of them could only speak of kind words, and much appreciation for the island of Siquijor.

On a lighter note, I also made so many friends with a lot of the people in Villa Marmarine, Max who i initially thought was Japanese, turned out to be a native of Lanao Del Sur, and Michael who was the go-to guy in gate ball, lawn tennis, and even day and night diving. And of course, all the charming waitresses of Villa Marmarine.

I remembered the tip i received regarding locals tapping you in the back. Nothing happened to me. In fact, it was a symbolic welcome to the family. I felt like a friend, a brother; a part of the family.

Every day and night of my stay in Siquijor, i have been drinking beer from the bottle and glass, and was offered a drink in one of the occasions. Again, nothing happened to me.

When will the time come, that we Filipinos, could see the hidden beauty of this province? We're all so afraid to discover our own heritage, and our country. If the people who are not bred in the Philippines can see something, there must be something.  It is really, really sad. My heart is broken.

Good thing, people, it's never too late.

8. Appreciating One's Hard-work in Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte

Abel was persistent that i share his number to all my traveler friends. He was my guide and motor driver in Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte. He took me to the best places, and even patiently waited for me as i was meditating in Burgos light house. He drank with me in Blue Lagoon and took my photos on the viaduct. Last night, it dawned on me, his persistence is actually working. More and more, i realize how i should help out this man. Not because i was getting tired of his kind words, but because this man, i know, will soon prosper. I think his request might just be the trigger for him to succeed. He actually inspired me to continue on with my vision, he inspired me to blog again.

Looking back at my experience traveling around the province of Ilocos Norte paved the way for me to think how one's gift should be maximized, not only for personal gratifications but also to inspire other people.

Back then, i really wanted to quit blogging for i find no time to actually write about the stories i experience from the road. To be honest, more people nowadays are more attracted to all the how to's and where to's. And these stories become really popular to readers. I don't blame them for these articles help travelers navigate their point of destination easier.

When i started writing for Pinoy Boy Journals, i was solely dedicated to writing about stories from the road. Just pure, raw stories. Years have passed, and i would sometimes write about travel guides but my instincts tell me to pursue what i am fond of doing -- sharing experiences and relieving these experiences on this blog.

Every time i think about quitting writing travel stories, i would recall people like Abel, who is eagerly waiting for a call from anybody reading this blog. Using this website as his voice, i could help by recommending him to other travelers like me. By providing him job opportunities, i help him out put food on the table for his family.

9. Getting a Hate Mail in Camotes Island, Cebu

I've never tried to reason out to people why i travel in the first place. It's my own vocation. And i love what i'm doing, so there's no need for me to go the extra mile and confront why some people hated what i did in Camotes Island.

I arrived early, and explored the rest of the island on a motorbike. I stopped by at a view point and several coastal towns, when i was lead to the biggest beach in the island - Santiago Bay. There, i enjoyed my usual serving of grilled octopus and plain rice. After getting stuffed from my terrific meal by the beach, together with motor driver, we explored the rest of Santiago Bay on a motorbike. Everything was fantastic, and the memories of Camotes Island will forever linger in my mind. I was proud to have visited this island off the coast of Cebu mainland.

When i came back home after posting the video of myself riding the motorbike along Santiago Bay, somebody posted a rather disturbing comment on my site. He said that i shouldn't be riding a motorbike along Santiago Bay, and that i was clearly selfish because of my action. For whatever reason i cannot figure out, i felt embarrassed for myself. I didn't know if i actually did something wrong as there's no signage that motorbikes aren't allowed along the beach. Still, i find it really odd that after years of traveling around the Philippines, i received my one and only hate mail.

Up until now, i am still trying to understand whatever i did wrong. Until it is finally clear to me, i would park my sorry for now, and continue what i love doing.

10. Singing the Karaoke Alone in Bacolod, Negros Occidental

Filipinos really love to sing. When you travel around the Philippines, and during the night, the only voice you will hear is from a local singing, the only bar or restaurant open is that of a karaoke bar. In Bacolod City, these places are called videoke joints, and there's tons of them. It's a very popular past time for most, if not all, Filipinos.

It was in the middle of the night. I just ate a very late dinner in one of the popular night spots in the city. I was looking forward to drinking my cold beer, and enjoying the rest of the night when i chanced upon a videoke bar. There were just a couple of people in one of these open spaces, taking only a few tables. Perfect. It's a place i would definitely check because it's completely devoid of too many people. I ordered my favorite San Miguel Beer, and started reserving my playlist for the night.

It was a very lovely evening, with only a few guests coming in and out. As i sang my third song, i noticed more and more people were actually listening to my singing. I knew i was in tune so i wonder why were they staring at me clueless. Suddenly, i remembered i was there drinking my favorite beer, belting out this 80's love song, all by myself.

I've been traveling solo for about 90 percent of my trips around the Philippines and even abroad, and this is one of the very few times i realized it would have been nice to share the table, the beer, and the mic with a friend.

11. Breaking My Heart in Manila

Oh, Manila! My love affair with you will never end. I was found roaming the dirty streets of capital for the nth time, doing absolutely non-touristy stuff. I was begging off to see the popular attractions and always looking forward to discovering new alleyways. All for me to discover more what makes this city so enigmatic - dirt and grime but lots of adventure in between.

I often wonder why so many people hate Manila. I can understand if foreigners hate it because they're not used to it, but Filipinos, that i am trying hard to comprehend. Hate is a very strong word which i don't like using. If you don't like Manila, then so be it. To each his own. But you never hate a city, you try to understand it.

When you try to study perceptions of people on destinations like Manila, you begin to understand realities. Not all cities are perfect. Look at Phnom Penh, Shanghai or even Colombo. I've had my share of awful stories there, but i never hated the city. Much worse, i will never hate Manila, for i was born here.

Let's be honest. Manila isn't the cleanest nor the most progressive city in Asia. But i can never say it's not beautiful. After visiting dozens of cities around Asia, i still find Manila full of character. That's why i don't hate the city. I may not like some of what it is now but i definitely don't hate it. There's something about Manila that i cannot find in other cities. And whenever i read awful reviews or negative sentiments about Manila, it really breaks my heart. I love Manila so much, i actually wrote a screenplay about it.

12. Becoming a Kid Again in Sablayan, Occidental Mindoro

I remember playing with these kids. They know nothing about what i was going through. Heck, that's none of their concern and i wouldn't want my sorrow to dampen their favorite activity. What else? Playing with water! In Sablyan, Occidental Mindoro, life is all about excitements and journeys.

Now that we're older, we sometimes look back at how the kids are enjoying so much of their life. Their innocence shields them from the realities of pain, disappointment and tragedy. The dangers of poverty and grim future are not yet on their minds. It's how long they will play in the afternoon, and how many more days before their birthday comes, are what matters. It's the kind of the mind that paints a smile on their face every day. And we, as adults, wished we could have the same smile when we're always worrying about bills to pay, partners to pursue, etc.

I asked the kids if they can show me their best moves as i was shooting a video, and i want them to star in it. Luckily, as i was taking photos, i was able to capture one of my most favorite travel pics of all time. I will never forget this afternoon, for once i realized how lucky i was, and that i was able to relieve this moment through my videos any day i want.

A Day in Paradise called Shangri-la in Mactan Island, Cebu, Philippines

STORY: Every now and then, we want our trips to be hassle and worry-free. Every now and then, we want to splurge a little, and invest in trips that aren't necessarily cheap but somehow feels worth it.

What happened to me a couple of months ago proved to be a blessing in disguise.I missed my flight to Dumaguete. Long story - I got drunk, overslept, haven't packed. I'm the most responsible traveler ever.

As I rush to the airport with nothing but hopes of finding the next available flight, I realized all my dreams of heading to Sumilon Island became non-existent. With several hours transit from Dumaguete Airport then boat transfer to the islands, not to mention the time constraint as i need to be back to Cebu City before dusk, it’s a big joke to push through with this plan. I needed to decide where should i head first. I’d like to keep myself cool but with jacked up prices heading to Cebu, I wondered if I had choice.

Apparently, none.So I skipped my supposed plan to Sumilon, and headed straight for Cebu City instead. Bought my tickets which cost more than my round trip ticket and accepted my fate. My plans for an island getaway was scheduled next day so I had a free day to roam around in Cebu. Now, where to go?

I arrived at the airport a few hours later. I tried browsing my Lonely Planet: Philippines book but i thought of just going wherever. I planned so much the past few days, i ended up not doing anything at all. So, why bother? It's nice that at the airport, you can already shop for tour packages. I wanted a day tour where there's a beach but still near the city. With a choice between Maribago and Shangri-la, I chose the latter for obvious reasons. It's Shangri-la, of course!

As the kind gentleman dressed in true Shangri-la fashion picked up my rucksack, I knew this is the kind of treatment only the rich can experience. I rode the private transfer for free and found myself in the company of other guests: a wealthy businessman and his lovely wife, a few Korean couples yet again, and even a local noontime show host. There I was, all scrumpy and looking ridiculously out of place. But i can still remember the joys of being one with the rich and famous.

I went for the kill and finally decided I wanted a day trip to Shangri-la Mactan. Even though I wasn't staying for the night just because I couldn't possibly afford yet, the lovely guest relations officer escorted me to the main office where I paid a sum for the trip. For about P3000 or about $55, i got an orange stub and P300++ worth of food allowance i can use at any of the restaurants inside the resort. I was so ready to do absolutely nothing and experience the world-class amenities of Shangri-la Mactan Cebu.

After eating the biggest pound burger in the world, and the most expensive coca-cola ever, I still had a couple of bucks left from my food allowance. So, I did what any health buff would do and order fresh fruit platter which I later on enjoyed by the beach.

I sat there alone but happy. I was looking at the others who seem to fancy a great day at the beach. While it’s raining hard in Manila, the sky was cooperating in this side of the country. The sun was shining, the clouds were clearing up and I was enjoying my second glass of Sangria in spectacular Shangri-la.

If you ask me, "Is it worth it?" Hellsssyyyeeaaah!
"Will I do it again?" I say, in a heartbeat.

One staff came up to me, with a bewildering look, asked me why was I alone? I just smiled. In a beautiful resort in paradise, how is it that one person cannot bring someone special? I guess, i didn't know what to say. She knew it.

REALIZATIONS: That night, I checked in at my  real accommodations for the night at the heart of the city. The room was forgettable, the experience was so forgettable, too. How can i complain? I don't have money. I realized… oh well! Life must go on. At least for a day, i made my dream come true!

The Ultimate Travel Guide to Bantayan Island, Cebu, Philippines Part 2

How to describe a Paradise?
Is it about describing a white sand beach, or crystal clear blue waters? Is it the feeling of being in touch with nature in a tropical setting? Are there coconuts? Some palm trees, perhaps?

If Paradise could be described in one word, i would probably say...it's Bantayan! Born out of sheer blessing from God, this island is by far the most perfect one i've seen in my five years of traveling around Asia.

This quiet fishing village is now beginning to have its share of exposure by means of lone searchers like me eager to find the next unspoiled beach. Although, on the opposite side, Malapascua has become the more popular route for travelers, Bantayan has a unique charm that's just incomparable.

For days, this is always the first sight whenever i wake up in the morning. And i could go on and on about how white the sand is, or how i follow closely the changing tides, but in reality, it's just plain and simple, it's the most beautiful place on earth.

I stayed at one of the lovely cottages of Kota Beach Resort. Although, there are many new resorts now along the coast of Bantayan Island, from expensive and popular ones like Sta. Fe and Bernard to lesser, unknown resorts, in the north of the Island, I certainly chose this spot because it is at this beachfront where the shore changes.

Have Fun In the Sun!
The coast of Bantayan is the perfect getaway for people who like to avoid the crowds. The number of tourists flocking to Bantayan are mostly couples on their honeymoons, locals from Cebu City and Manila, and of course, expats, who chose to call this island their home.

If you wish to do outdoor sports, you can make it happen. Most of the people here are tuned into skim boarding, kite flying, and jet ski.

I spent the rest of my days here drinking beer while listening to the calm sounds of little waves crashing the shore. The sand is as pure as it can get, with relatively very few people in sight, one could spend the rest of the day absolutely looking at the horizon and not getting bored.

How is the food?
Food is moderately priced and usually boasts of Portugese, Continental and a flair of Asian/Filipino cuisine. Because Bantayan is an hour boat trip from Sta. Fe central, prices are a little higher but still affordable. The people manning the restaurants are the friendliest in the whole province. They're charming, and are open for a chat.

How are the accommodations?
For a cottage like this, which you can share with up to six people, it is about P2000 or roughly $35+ for a night, which is not so bad once you've shared your part. It's an A/C room with clean bathroom and double beds. The best part is, it's right smack by the beach, so anytime of the day, you have a commanding view. For shoe stringers, there's about less than P500/rooms or about $10 near the town center.

For those who dream of invigorating yourself from the stress of city life, i couldn't suggest a far batter place to de-stress than in Bantayan.

As i said in the previous post, once you get here you would just simply say, it's worth it. In my case, i didn't even complain because i already knew that once i get to this place, i will not know why or how, but i will love it for sure.

The Ultimate Travel Guide to Bantayan Island, Cebu, Philippines Part 1

The Ultimate Travel Guide to Bantayan Island, Cebu, Philippines Part 1

STORY: After traveling around Cebu City for a few days, my time spent in the electric lights and enigmatic charm of the oldest province in  the Philippines is done. It's time to head up north to where paradise is found. It's funny, that after writing so many stories here in my blog about my adventures around the Philippines, there's always a new "Paradise" island waiting to be discovered. I couldn't complain as the Philippines boasts of the best beaches in Asia.

I love Thailand and its lovely beaches, but the unspoiled and uninterrupted views of white sandy islands of the Philippines is impeccable. And this one in particular, not necessarily unheard of, is actually still a newcomer in the ball game.

How to get there?
If you're in Cebu City and tired of the hectic life style, head to the North Bus Terminal. From here, pack some goodies to take with you in this long journey. There's cup noodles at P25 or around $.75, soft drinks, native delicacies and a bunch of other stuff you can take with you.

TIP: Because you know you're heading to the port more than a hundred kilometers away, head out here as soon as you brush your teeth and pack your rucksacks. The sooner you're here the better. Reserve your seat as soon as you get here.

Don't be confused on which bus to take because in reality here, it's not at all confusing. It's very easy. Ask around where's the bus to where you're going. "Manong" will point you to the right direction. If you leave the north terminal at around 7AM, you will most likely arrive at the destination around lunch time. Don't worry about eggs, they're plenty to where you're going. Heck, its called the "Egg basket of Cebu".

AC or Non-AC?
You have two choices at most times, one is an aircon bus which is of course more expensive, but it's still dirt cheap. This type of bus leaves every hour, but schedule may vary as of this writing. You can also ride the non-aircon bus which i purposely rode.

With no breakfast at all, i grabbed my newly boiled hot cup of noodles and mineral water and started munching them like I've never eaten before.

TIP: Easy on the liquid. There are no toilet breaks here. Meanwhile, as i munch on the noodles the aroma was all over the bus, and most of the locals began looking at my direction. I just smiled. I could have said "Kain?" which is to offer my food to them if they like. A few minutes more, the bus was leaving already, and my loins felt like when i was in grade school.

Ride the non-aircon bus, if only for the awesome view. Green fields, lonely coconut trees, kids going to school, men and women with their usual chores, are all what you will see. You'll never know what you'll stumble upon on your way here. I saw funny posters, tranny divas and even a motorcycle competition which was just heating up.

As seen below, the best view to watch the competition is in the balcony.

I have to tell you, it's not an easy ride. The beach is four hours away from the city, 110 kilometers from Cebu city, passing through some unpaved roads, and what appears and smells like volcanic ash fall (cement and gravel). But i am pretty sure, once you've reached the spot, you'll know it's all worth it!

A few more stops for some passengers after, and you're on the port heading to one of the most beautiful islands in the world.

Did i mention the place already? Let me take you with me on a trip to the majestic island of Bantayan!
