Travel Notes from Don Mueang International Airport in Bangkok, Thailand

It’s only barely 2 months since my last travel, yet it feels like a lifetime. I am so used to traveling every month that one missed month of travel and I feel like a newbie. The flight from Manila to Don Mueang was late for about an hour. Good thing my connecting flight doesn’t leave until the next day at noon. Don Mueang is an old airport, albeit it looks like I was transported back to the 80s. Everything looks older. The only positive thing is that the line towards the immigration is a lot shorter. In no time, I was ready to leave. But first, 7-11. So good to finally buy my usual favorites - Spinach & Cheese Sandwich & Green Tea Genmai. I hoard this drink and take it home with me back in Manila.

It’s only about 10 minutes to get to my airport hotel. I paid P162 Baht via Grab and arrived and checked in at Moji Hotel in a breeze. My stay doesn’t come with a breakfast. Good thing, I bought a Ham Sandwich & Banana for breakfast. I am such a light breakfast eater. That’s why it’s impractical for me to avail of a buffet breakfast in any hotel.

I booked my accommodation via Agoda. Now that I think about it, the room isn’t at par with what I paid for. There are visible signs of use, scratches on the floor, paint chipping, and bed sheets that looked like they’ve been used overtime. I don’t know if it’s the location, but there were mosquitoes in the room. Would I stay again at Moji? Probably not. After long years of travel, I’ve become more choosy with where I stay. Gone are the days of me staying in hostels and dodgy guesthouses. And room size has now become a top priority. My last draw was in Hanoi. Will share this story in another post.

I woke up at around 7 a.m., and prepared myself my breakfast. I am not worried about leaving late because it only takes 10 minutes to get to Terminal 1, and I availed of an AirAsia Fast Pass. It enables me to have a separate check-in counter, ideally a priority over the immigration, etc. I just hope Cebu Pacific will have something like this in the future. I’ll purchase this again next time I fly AirAsia. And looking at the signboard - Vientiane, Luang Prabang, and Siem Reap caught my eye. I’ve always wanted to fly there bound for Kashmir. Let’s see. I think I am ready to come back to India for the third time.

I am writing this blog on board my flight. In less than an hour, hopefully, the view of the Himalayas will appear on my window seat. I specifically purchased a seat 3F so I have a view of the mountains, if it’s not too cloudy. In the meantime, I am finishing the movie Solo Con Tu Parejas directed by Alfonso Cuarón, back in the day. Yesterday, I watched Yolo, a Chinese film, and it was great. I can’t believe the lead actress didn’t use any prosthetics. It took 3 years to film because the lead actress started as overweight, and after a diet and intense workout regimen which included boxing, she lost 50 kilos. Wow! So inspiring!

I’ll be more focused with my Muay Thai training once I get back to Manila. My main goal has never been to lose weight but to exercise my heart. It’s a bonus if I become thinner, though.

Travel Notes from Siam Ocean World, Bangkok, Thailand

I've always wanted to go to Siam Ocean World because it is one of the largest aquariums in the world. In the past, I've always taken this place for granted, pursuing more adventure outside the country's capital. So, when i had a chance two weeks ago, i immediately grabbed the opportunity. I was suppose to go here a day earlier and at night, but i stumbled upon a couple lost Filipinos outside Pratunam. With nothing much to do, i spent a few hours helping them get from point a to point b. I've always believed that this is the beauty of traveling. And when you see a fellow country men, the first instinct is to help them. Talking to them made me realize how i see places now so differently. I will tell you more about this in the coming days.

When we said goodbye, the aquarium is already closed. I went back to Rambuttri, my home in Bangkok for a few days. I spent the rest of the night, trying out local food and drinking beer to end this hot and steamy day in Bangkok.

Siam Ocean World is located inside the Siam Paragon mall. To be exact, ride the escalator one level down to start your adventure. Honestly, i had no idea what to expect. I haven't been to an aquarium before, and it is only fitting that i am spending my last few days of this trip in an inspiring place. I just wanted to relax and spend a quiet afternoon oggling at marine life.

I love the ocean so much. If you ask me, ocean or mountain? I know the answer already in a heart beat. While i was searching for places to go around Bangkok that I haven't been to yet before, Siam Ocean World was top on my list.

I paid the package which includes the trip inside the ocean world, free pop corn and soda, and the 5-D movie. I didn't do the behind the scenes and fish feeding tour which is supposed to be included in my ticket for the simple reason that i am not interested. Seeing marine life this close is an exhilarating experience. I've never seen such number of fish and corals. My absolute favorite was the experience seeing these flesh eating sharks circling around a human head figure made of rock because i doubt if ever i will see them in this lifetime. It helped that the soundtrack to the room was spot on. Ocean World now includes live penguins in one of the rooms. I've never seen a penguin in my life so that's a life-changing moment right there. In total, i think i spent about four hours inside because i was taking my time. With about two thousand photos, and hours of video footage, i think i spent my money wisely. Although the 5-D movie was anti-climactic, it still is a good time to sit back and enjoy the funny movie.

If you will ask me if it's recommended, i would gladly say yes. Although i know kids will find this place extra-special, adults can find ways to spend time inside aquarium with delight. I sincerely wished my nephews were with me inside, as i know they will have a mind-blowing experience, too.

Before i left, i spent an hour rummaging at the shopping section. I bought a total of five stuffed marine animals to give my nephews a souvenir of the place. This is the least that i could do to share my happiness. I miss my family. And i always pray that one day i can bring them all to my most favorite places in the world.

A few days after, i left Bangkok excited to see my family and eat familiar food again, but heart broken because i know i will miss the people i have met in this trip.

Of course, i will not end this trip without a bang. Sadly, i got so disappointed at the last leg of my journey that it made me realize one important thing. Sometimes, when people say do not go, you have to listen to them. There's a reason for that, of course. More of this story on my next post.

Kob Khun Krap, Bangkok!

Travel Notes from Bayoke Sky Tower, Bangkok, Thailand

It took me one whole day to get to where i am right now. I woke up feeling so relaxed and refreshed this day. I wanted to get out of Khao San Road the soonest possible time. Not because i didn't like the place. It was the birthplace of my Asian Escapade, for chrissake. I simply wanted to explore more places in Bangkok, those places i haven't visited in the past. After spending an absolute delight in the heart of Siam (my most favorite destination in Bangkok), i knew i wanted to end the night on top... of Bangkok.

After a relaxing ciggie break outside Siam Paragon, i asked a couple of locals to point me where i could watch the city from a sky tower. They recommended that i head out for Bayoke Sky Tower. True enough, the view from the top was mind-blowing. True, there are more peaceful places to watch Bangkok from 80 floors up but all of these places are hard to reach, and you need more money to stay and relax. For example, one bar that i have checked is hidden along Sukhumvit Road, where prices for drinks almost equal to my breakfast, lunch and dinner for the day. What's worse is the place had awful reviews. It was a no-brainer for me to choose Bayoke Sky Tower.

To get to Bayoke Sky Tower from Siam Paragon is very straight-forward, albeit, a very long walk. And the walk wasn't a walk in the park, it was torture. The afternoon Bangkok heat that day was excruciating. I was wet in sweat. Finally, after passing by countless number of hotels, convention centers, bridges over the river, a dozen eateries, and too many shopping outlets, i reached my destination. I felt so disappointed seeing more than a dozen tourist buses filled with too many tourists. I can already foresee what it must be like on the tower. I can definitely see in the eyes of the tourists how tired they were, and these were all painful to see. The line was long to the ticket counter, and i almost backed out with a fear of being trapped with too many of these tourists. I told myself, i have come this far, and going back to where i was would be a stupid idea. So, i braved the crowd and fell in line. Less than fifteen minutes later, keeping my space in an elevator filled with ten camera toting tourists, and arguing with a concierge who've seen too many tourists that being polite is the least of her concerns, i have stepped on the rotating observatory deck of Bayoke. I came right in time. The view of the whole city from the top, as the sun is about to set, was one of the most peaceful moments of my trip. It's quite surreal to think that in just a matter of minutes, i can find solitude in the heart of one of the most chaotic cities on the planet.

I paid a couple of hundred bahts to enter the tower but it was worth it. I just wished it could be cheaper for those not dining in the restaurant. The good news is that my ticket comes with one free drink at the bar. So while others were enjoying their beer, i ordered their most expensive mocktail.

Bayoke Sky Tower could have been one of my most favorite places in Bangkok, if only there were less tourists who know nothing but too shout, laugh, and chat in decibels as high as the tower. I understand that getting here is a happy experience, and sharing precious moments with loved ones can be overwhelming. But always remember, you're sharing moments with strangers, too. It's a public space, not your bedroom. These strangers may want a quiet time, and are definitely not interested in whatever you're doing. It's called sensitivity, and these tourists ( i don't want to mention the nationality but i guess you know already), surely don't have it.

After spending three hours on top (could have been six), i finally left. Minutes after, i was back on the ground, with noises from honking motorcycles, merchants bartering with tourists, and a whole lot noise pollution. It became clear to me, i was lucky to be on the ground. At least, the noises here unstoppable.

Travel Notes from Khao San Road, Bangkok, Thailand

It has been a homecoming for me. I'm right here in Khao San killing time before i am off to the airport for my flight to New Delhi tonight.

Last night, i had the most quiet, yet most rewarding night out with a big 'ol bottle of Chang of course. I've seen more beautiful lady boys than actual girls. And yes, it was a level-up from last time that i was here. I still love Bangkok, and i have seen a couple of stuff i want to buy but i need to pack light for India. Anyway, i have a free day when i return so that should be my agenda.

Also, from the last time i was here, i also become more Thai looking. Now, everyone seems to think i'm from here. I try to disassociate myself from the normal tourist-holding a Lonely Planet book. An old man hugged me like his son in one of the Pad Thai places. I knew i was home.

Since last night, i was going to familiar places and it's such a delight to know my favorite places are still here. I've been spending a little too much but it's okay. By the way, i am staying at the very same guesthouse where i was the last time i was here. Same old, same old... very warm bath and confusing aircondition system. It's only 300 baht, i got what i paid for.

So there... I need to contact my hotel in New Delhi but if i can't because it's 45 baht/min to call international. I am taking my chances and will see later on if i get the taste of Indian surprise.

Surprise me, India. So looking forward to it.

P.S. Can i just say how this keyboard sucks. I am typing really really hard now. Errr. ha ha

Travel Notes from Chiang Mai, Thailand

(l-R) Alex on vocals, Christian on drums, Jerik on guitars, MM on tip box.

Looking back at the two weeks spent around Thailand gave me a clearer impression why i love traveling so much. The infinity of possibilities when you're in a foreign territory is always something to look forward to. As of the moment, i am writing what i miss which sucks because you know your trip is finally over. But at the same time, i look forward to going back home and spending time with the people i love. Get comfy in bed, laze for a few days and just enjoy what is left before i work and then travel to greater destinations!!!

With so many people you meet along the way, from the first night in Bangkok along Khao San Road to the train rides down south and up north, chill people you drink with at the beaches of Koh Phangan at Power Beach and the really cool artist you meet in Ao Haad Salad. What an impression it gives you. The world is beautiful. The People are beautiful.

On my last night in Bangkok, i got robbed by paying so much for a ping pong show in Patpong, a trumpet show, a blade popping balloon show, etc. What the heck, you'll lose your sanity and money in Thailand if you're not careful. Spent the last few hours buying so many stuff i don't need but have to buy because they are ridiculously cheap. Example is a really handsome white strapped watch in Chatuchak for 100 friggin' baht.  I also have never met a girl who actually bought me a drink, and she's Thai. On my last night, we had a very sad goodbye. But as i always say, i know i will come back again for sure.

It's my third time in Thailand and just to be fair, my first time was so touching, i felt a tear falling from my eyes. Although this trip was equally memorable because the people i hang out with in this journey made it possible for me never to forget how amazing it is to travel.

I may be lazy at some time, i may lag when i think about what to do, decisions are harder for me in the morning after a hangover. My priorities change, i'd live for today and worry about tomorrow.

Now, i have a slight flu. Maybe the endless Chang nights and extreme stuff i did took a toll on my body. I just had tamarind soup with fish and shrimp, the best of Filipino food. I am on calamansi detox now so i can regain my strength. But either way, this trip is so unforgettable, this is one for the books.

On the other hand, while this trip was going on, i had the best opportunity to write for online backpacking sites and a special feature in travel blog sites, world's best here... http://travelblogsites.com/2010/02/12/pinoy-boy-jerik-de-guzman-talks-travel/

Travel Notes from Chiang Rai, Thailand

As of the moment, my body hurts in all the wrong places. Somewhere there, somewhere here. Chiangmai is one place i could never forget. I did so many firsts in this cool city. Yesterday, i booked myself 22 zip lines across the northern Thailand mountains. It was so high if anyone will see what i was doing, they might probably think it's a different person. I am chill kind of guy. I enjoy drinking Chang beer and watching the day go by. I walk around. Eat something i like. Sometimes i do out of this world stuff. But it's very rare. But yesterday, i braved my biggest fear which is heights. Today was another tour of what Chiang Mai boasts. I rode an elephant, trekked for about two hours in total to swim in the coldest waterfall I've been to anywhere in the world. And then, i paddled my way across rocks streams and rode the bamboo raft in the end.

Tomorrow i promise to reward myself with a really awesome Thai massage. Shop a little because all my clothes now are soiled. Right now, my new German friends are waiting for me outside this internet shop so i have to make this quick. Drinking Chang and enjoying the cool breeze.

I have so many photos to upload and videos to still watch. I even took a video of myself as i zipped in that line so you will see how high it is.

Also i learned to accept that i am a moody person. Sometimes, i talk too much. Sometimes i prefer not to speak and keep my calm. Either Way, rules of the game, show your true colors. And as far as i know i am travelling not complaining but just accepting and embracing the world. It's not about just visiting that one place, it's actually finding that one thing that makes you smile, in my case it's how slow time flies in this side of the world.

Travel Notes from Chiang Mai, Thailand

A week has passed already, and time flies really fast but on the train, every second counts. I miss the southern islands so much but i am really looking forward to exploring the northern region of Thailand. I just arrived via train in Chiang Mai a few hours ago. As soon as i stepped outside the train, the cool northern breeze embraced me with open arms. I went out for a walk. Found myself eating spicy Tom Yum soup and some meatballs i don't know what they are made up. I walked around for a bit more and bought two huge sweet ripe mangoes. Really tasty for a morning. I still have to know what is out there. So far, the people are not so used to seeing backpackers who look like Thai, hence me. Same same but different. Thailand is so huge. I don't think i can cover everything at one time.

Last night was fun chatting with some Swiss people who fell in love with the Philippines, married a Filipina, opened a dive resort in Sabang Beach. Got free booze and tobacco you inhale. The stuff that clears up your passageway.

Prices in Chiangmai have decreased dramatically, from 150 Baht motor taxi rides to a dirt cheap 30 Baht for a whole taxi jeep, and 200 Baht guest rooms. I'm wearing a light jacket now. It's sunny but really cool here in Chiangmai. I'm really looking forward to doing so many things here. Thank you mom and dad, for increasing my credit card limit so i can book some tours around. Maybe a monk chat which i've been meaning to do, a Muay Thai boxing match which i want to watch tonight (they say it's the real fight not the show match they have in bangkok) and the touristy-tourist elephant trek and waterfalls. So far, i haven't done anything touristy around Thailand and i think i am going to do the same here in Chiang Mai. I wanna go to Pai but there's no more time, maybe when i come back again and do Chiang Rai all the way to Lao and/or Myanmar. Either way, i am taking everything as they come.

Now, i am heading towards the big temple in the mountain and see the waterfalls. It's a little tiring to be thought as Thai when you're a Filipino. It has its pros and cons, you know.

Meanwhile, for those Manila Lovers out there, please help spread the word. Tweet and Comment http://www.gobackpacking.com/Blog/2010/02/08/manila-forgotten-city/

Travel Notes from Hualamphong, Thailand

Wow! What a day this is. I spent more than half a day traveling on a ferry boat, bus and finally via train. It's almost 2PM when i arrived in Hualamphong Train Station. I miss the beach so much; the cool breeze of sunset at power beach in Bantai and also the happy hour spent just chilling and talking sense with heaps of people from around the world. Somehow, it makes you realize more the real reason why people travel, not for anything else but to make a reason about your life. Khao and Jack are really awesome bartenders and i would definitely go back again and just hang out.

I arrived in Bangkok so tired from yesterday's non-stop party at the Half Moon event. Paid 500 Baht plus free drink a CD compilation which is what I'm listening right now. Really cool trance and progressive house on this track. Surprise, surprise! I've just had the best shower in a week, all courtesy of my friend Nio who i met up with here in Bangkok. He's staying for a multinational conference. We're just waiting for everybody to get ready so we could all head somewhere for a well deserved dinner and party in Bangkok - Good time city!

I dressed up quite sharp today. After almost a day of traveling, the train got delayed and delayed and today the train was at its slowest. It's so unbelievable. That's why i decided to look and feel good tonight. Will definitely check out Bed Supperclub, Glow and Narcissus. Yey! I'm back in the city. Can't wait to shop, that is if i still have some dough.

Travel Notes from Koh Pha Ngan, Thailand

Sorry! It took me a long time to blog again. Internet was crazy around Ao Haad Salad in the north east of Koh Pha Ngan. I stayed in a small bay up hill, down hill. You get everything you need. Stayed till the next day listening to good 'ol music from an Irish dude i met. Really cool! I am still here in the island after a few days. Prices have jacked up since i was last here, about a year ago. I still love this island though but i think one needs more money traveling around here. The last time i was here, i stayed most of the days and nights lounging around Haad Rin Beach. I reckon now it's not really an ideal place to stay if you're gunning for quiet beaches and relaxing in the sun. It's littered with people everywhere.

So, i am now in an internet shop in Thongsala. I just booked my ferry, bus, train for about 1450 baht, not very cheap but maybe the most comfortable way to travel around. I've been drinking shakes like craaaazy. I've had about three hours of sleep today. Went back home around 8AM after the Half Moon Party, with no more Baht left, all spent on good Chang Beers, smokes and entry to the event - right smack in the middle of the jungle. This is some trippy shit. I am staying now in one of the quiet beaches in Bantai. The beach is deserted and it's just chilled environment. Met so many English people and had good talks with them about life. Also met a Brazilian girl who's just the sweetest girl I've met.

I would have loved to go to Koh Samui after this but Baht is running out, time is running out, what else. More on that later. Good thing, I only need to pay a few hundred Bahts for a fan rooms and most of time, split taxi cab fares.

The half moon party was the best party i've been to all my life. The set up was great, the sound system could have been better, but the DJs were just awesome and phenomenal.  There's a lot of progressive house music playing and i particularly loved the set of the Asian guy who was looping the tracks while the sun was rising. What more can you ask for? I chanced upon again the Japanese couple i met in the beach earlier.

I have about three hours to go before i catch the ferry to Surrathani. Same old, same old where i was a year ago. I can't wait to go to Chiang Mai though and head to Pai for some really cool chill in the mountains. I just hope they accept Mastercard as i am nearing out of cash.

Someone asked me a few days ago, why i was in Thailand when the islands of the Philippines are the best in Asia? I paused because i cannot find the right answer. I know for sure when i get back home, it's Philippinea time again.

Travel Notes from Koh Tao, Thailand

I'd like to keep this short because i'm heading to the other beach to watch the sunset. So, i just arrived after almost a whole day of traveling from the capital to down south. I took the sleeper train which i missed a lot and so i enjoyed every single hour of it. I had numerous naps but the last one after the KFC take out was the longest and the best. I always say i love trains. The slowness just makes you realize the importance of life. I really don't like the hectic life back in the city, in any city. I'd like to spend my days absolutely doing nothing and taking time as it arrives.

Just to be clear, I am not Thai. Everyone here seems to think otherwise. After i speak english, they all laugh. That has been the usual instance since i came to Thailand in November of 2008 in Krabi and Koh Phangan. Up until now, it hasn't changed.

I just had a watermelon shake and 2 big plastic bottles of water. I am spending way too much but i'm slowly finding the answers to my question. 7-11 is always a good place to find really cheap good food.

Koh Tao is absolutely beautiful. And Filipinos are unheard of this side of the archipelago. But it's good exploring, the beach is cest' magnificique! I'm sorry, i wasn't  able to upload a photo of the beach as i left my USB connector in my room. I got a 600 baht fan room sharing for two. The best part is the view of the beach.

I wonder why so many tourists come this side of Thailand. Koh Tao is slowly becoming the next Koh Samui and i can't argue with that. I just don't know if it has something to do with heaps of nude sunbathers along Sairee beach?!!!

As for me, maybe i am not sure when i am leaving this island. LoL

Travel Notes from Bangkok, Thailand

How do i describe such an eventful flight and rockin first night in bangkok? First, i was surprised that celebrities do try to be thrifty. They were in the same flight as i am. But that's another funny story to tell. Maybe next time.

In order to get a cheaper cost for the taxi from Suvarnabhumi, i hooked up with a couple - a girl from Sweden and an English guy. What was suppose to be 400 baht became 100 baht each as we split the cost. Looking very good. The lovely couple came from Malapascua in Cebu, Philippines. They stayed there for three weeks. I haven't been there. Nice!

I just settled in my room, not really cheap-cheap but it was okay. It was about 1AM when i arrived, and i needed to drop off my huge bags. I have a strong feeling, i over-packed again. But heck, at least, i get to save money and not buy anymore of the good stuff here in Khao San Road. There's just too many nice things.

Right now, i am well over my budget but i rewarded myself for my first night. A bottle of Chang was suppose to be my sole date for the night, and then somehow the vibe kept getting better and i was ordering more. It was actually one of those road side beer stalls with matching mono block chairs in place. Police are crazy here, they come around and just relax for a bit. They try to make everyone leave. These poor guys are working their asses of to earn. What's worse, travelers here are on holiday. C'mon!

But, i went back. I got a free beers from the Thai girl owner. She was very nice to me. I went back to the hostel around 6AM to catch some sleep. I woke up around 10AM, and obviously hammered. Three hours of sleep - not really very nice.

It was a very good night. It was chilled and everyone was just so relaxed. We were talking about how backpackers are such a snob when they're walking, and maybe it was the heavy weight on their backs. But a little smile wouldn't hurt, right? All of this, while we were helping the beer vendors sell more bottles.

Right now, i am sitting in a computer shop, writing as much as i can to remember what i do everyday. Internet here is cheap, about 10 baht for 15 minutes and you put coins so you can extend. I am nearing 13 minutes, and i want to write more. But i need to doze off in a bit. I walked around Khao San and Chao Phraya river. The heaps of places i went to before are surely missed.

I really miss this girl i met last November 2008. She's French-Vietnamese, and i met her on the train in Surrathani. I just walked to where we used to walk before and eat. Sorry for being a little sentimental.

Anyway, I just booked a ticket going to Chumphon and the night sleeper train which i have will leave Lumphini at around 7PM so i need to be there in a few hours. Journey takes about less than 8 hours. I miss riding the trains. It's long and a perfect romantic set up. I am now with my friend, Melissa. Everyone thinks we're a couple. We're just friends. Last night, i met this very cute Brazilian girl. She's very pretty! More of them please when i head down south. ;)

See you, Koh Tao, tomorrow. Can't wait to head to the beach!!!

Travel Notes from Sinat Guest house, Bangkok, Thailand

On my last night in Bangkok, i went out for some last minute shopping. I bought a couple of skirts for my sisters and mom, some tees for myself and my brother, Thai silk boxers for my dad and souvenirs like the frog with the stick you scratch on its back. Pretty trippy stuff! It may sound a little annoying at first but believe me it grows on you! And i have no idea what its for. It worked out fine because my little nephew actually liked it.

I went out with Adam for one last time along Khao San Road, bought a couple of pints at a stall near 7-11 and then met up with a group of backpackers who just got back from a 6 month journey from India - Spanish and Aussies. I downed a couple of big bottles of Chang that night so i was pretty loaded. Had a discussion with the Spaniards as to where did San Miguel Beer originate. To cut the long story short, i lost the debate as the brewed beer came from Spain not in Manila. But that was okay, we both loved the beer anyway.

I went back to Sinat to fix some stuff, waited for my bus transport to the airport. It was around 9PM that time. I went outside for a smoke, i was in front of the guesthouse trying to remember the first day i arrived. After almost two weeks, I'm saying goodbye to go back home. It was sad. I was so bummed out. Said goodbye to Adam, and the rest of the folks at Sinat. Telling them I'll be back in January and that i most definitely will stay there again. I know i will. This part is killing me big time!

The bus arrived loaded with two backpackers, a Korean who's been in Bangkok for just three days, all in all four days of vacation. What? There was also an Argentinian dude who's now based in London. And we spent the trip talking about Pingpong (haha!) and how it sucks big time when you're leaving and your friends staying. All of us felt the same way, so it was pretty nice knowing the feeling is mutual and you're definitely not alone.

I arrived at the airport. Suvarnabhumi is so beautiful. Wait a minute. The bus left, and i just asked the guys if they paid anything.  Because i didn't! I wanted to run back to the driver but he left already. So that's how i will remember Bangkok, giving something to me without asking anything in return.

The next few hours was spent waiting for my plane to depart. I was listening to some tunes on my iPod. Looking at all the amazing photos i have on my camera. And then i left with a heavy heart. For the first time, in all of my travels, tears were falling from my eyes. This is not cheesy. Some random thing, i guess. When you've fallen in love with a country, things like this happen when least expected. Heck, i didn't even mind if the flight back to Manila was so turbulent. For the first time, i was able to nap on the flight. I was just so depressed to be going home. I really wanted to stay for more days or maybe weeks. But i knew, my home is in Manila.

It was a memorable experience for me; a trip of a lifetime, a journey i can talk about forever to my friends back home. The story of my journey is ground breaking. I am not just talking about a beautiful scenery but memories that will live with me forever. The good thing though, is that i have more years ahead of me to go back whenever i can. Filipinos don't need a visa. With enough savings, i will last for another month in the country of smiles.

NOTE:

I left Bangkok a few days earlier when the massive rally around Suvarnabhumi airport started taking place. I wanted to stay for one more week, head to Chiang Mai and then come back after four days to Bangkok and fly to Manila from there. Good thing though, i left for Manila already, coz if not, shit would happen. And i'd be stuck in BKK, not that its not a good thing. It's quite an adventure actually.

Next thing to do is to plan for my next trip this 2009. To continue my broken route across South East Asia. I have to draft the plans already. But i have no clue where to start. I'll get there after the holidays. Merry Christmas!

Travel Notes from Tonsai Beach and Railay Bay, Krabi Thailand

I flew from Kuala Lumpur KLCCT to Thailand via Krabi. I chose Krabi over Phuket, i could fly directly to Phuket but i know it's so touristy. Why choose a place where i'm sharing an island with a million people, when i can have some peace and quality time in Krabi? I took the Air Asia flight to Krabi. Don't be confused with the time. Thailand is an hour late than KL. I was asking the ticket agency man so i'm flying for just 15 mins. Apparently, it's 1 hour and 15 mins. On the plane, i ordered a Malaysian chicken rice with salted fish. I was seated where a lot of solo backpackers were seating. I met up with an Austrian dude who was on vacation for three weeks. He's going to Krabi and then he's gonna dive in Koh Tao. A few minutes later, i met a Canadian Chinese guy who's doing the same route only that after Thailand he has huge plans for India. (Which didn't push through because of the bombing incidents in Mumbai). We then decided to go together since we're going on the same route anyway.

We all went to Krabi town, rode the cheapest bus possible out of the airport. Krabi international airport is a really outstanding airport. But it was sleepy. Not a lot of people are there. I exchanged my US dollars and left with my friends.

I arrived in Krabi town, thankfully we pushed thru going to the beach already. We were headed for Ao Nang Beach -  the tourist magnate of Krabi. There were a lot of travel agencies, lots of expensive accommodations and whole lot lot of restaurants and food stalls. While walking, we stopped by a restaurant and at around 1PM, they ordered Pad Thai. I ordered for a big bottle of Chang Beer. I was full with the hearty meal i ate in the plane. We then proceeded to ride a short long tail boat going to Tonsai Beach. Luckily we chose Tonsai.

It's a backpacker's island paradise. All the young people are there. I saw people climbing the cliff. There's a small beach, with a small community of Thais manning the island. They're either working at the bar, selling food on free standing food stalls, or simply smoking dope on the side.

On my way to the island, i knew already why everyone's going to Thailand. It's so mesmerizing and beautiful. The white sandy beach, the amazing cliff, and the smiling people all make this island top notch.

You'll say you're definitely in South East Asia. We walked further to get the cheapest deal on accommodations  As you know, the cheaper your room, the longer you can stay. We managed to get a room for three nights and i just paid 166 Baht. It was a double room. Situated at the foot of the mountain. You need a good walk, passing by craters in the road. There were a lot of frogs too. Anyway, one of my friends slept on the floor. I got one bed for myself. They came prepared with all the necessary backpacking essentials suited for camping. I didn't, so i had the bed.

We went to the beach. I took my first swim after weeks already of beating the heat out of myself in Singapore and Malaysia. The water was calm. And for the first time i was swimming with my sandals on as some parts of the beach are a little rocky.

After a few hours i went to Freedom Bar just across.

I went for happy hour cocktails and watch the gorgeous sunset. Everyone's there. Look at them like all hippies from around the world - drinking cocktails, smoking cigarettes and weed, talking non-stop, and listening to Bob Sinclair. The amazing cliff right smack where the sunset is - just great!

Some more big bottles of Chang later, I was already talking to an English couple. We talked about music really. How they love Prodigy and Chemical Brothers. How i started partying at 15. They were really impressed because i told them i still listen to those stuff but i'm beginning to be more mature with my interest turning from the loud and annoying sounds to the calming tones of Moby and the trippy music of Underworld. It was a good talk, i was downing another big bottle of Chang. I'm such an alcoholic.

The next few days, we were still hanging out. I asked them if they have the time, do fly to Manila. They were looking forward to it. But you can never get lost in Manila. Everyone speaks good English. They were staying in the same guesthouse as we are. Apparently, everyone i know wanted to go to the Philippines. Soon. Not now, everyone's going to Thailand then either Australia or New Zealand, and yes India for 6 months.

You know me, i'm quite moody. One minute i party, the next i just want to chill with my iPod on and lie in the sand thinking absolutely nothing. So there were moments where i was doing my own thing while my new found friends were trekking. That's just my thing. But we always end up drinking a couple of beers at night. They usually head home earlier while i stay for some more.

If you're in Tonsai Beach, head to Freedom Bar and look for Chang who sells Chang. He's a really good guy. I would talk to him about stuff. Mostly how i look like him.  I was asking if they've met my brother? His name is Chang. Everyone would just laugh. I even got his lighter. I forgot to give it back to him. What's funnier is that when the crowd in Freedom is pretty boring, he would walk up to look for us in Small bar a few walks away from my guesthouse, deeper in the jungle. This is the place where all the naughty stuff happens.

I could have taken a picture but i was respecting the privacy of everyone. And we keep it light that way. I don't know if i can blog about this. But you can just order whatever, they'll give it to you. But you have to be responsible, you're not in high school anymore when you're stoned you're gonna trash the place later. I think they got impressed because i was one of the few last standing men still drinking at 5am. I want to drink more, but i need to head home. I couldn't wake up at 12nn. This is not Manila.

In Small Bar, the bartenders are so amazingly friendly. They were all looking at me, because i don't think they've met anyone who looks like them but is not Thai. I would notice how they would look at me, thinking what's the difference between them and me. Everyone in Tonsai thinks i'm Thai. 10 out of 10 people think i'm Thai. And close to 90% couldn't believe i speak English really well. I was hanging out in the bar when i met Jessica, she's American. She's a really funny girl. She's with her Thai boyfriend. She's so funny and cool. She was telling how she's so bummed out and stressed because she hasn't had a pedicure and spa for the week. She's nice. She even told me the story of some freak guy who has pictures with them in the well even if he's not with them. How did he do that? Really similar to the Ring movie of Japan only it's in Thailand.

That gave me a good scare. But i went home that night so wasted. I was suppose to meet up with them the next day to ride the boat going to the town onwards Koh Pha Ngan. I wasn't able to wake up at 8AM. I slept some more. There were also some Germans who had dreadlocks and all that shit. They gave me a hit, i gladly accepted. They were saying "no shit you're not Filipino. You must be american!" We were just laughing and listening to Bob Marley. I am now a convert of reggae music. Thank you.

The next day, Martin, Peter and I trekked on the other side of the island going to another beach. The picture above is the cliff i trekked. No shit! And i must say I've never been more proud of myself. The trek was hard as hell. Imagine walking horizontally so you can fit in the tiny little hole from the cave. And from there, was going up  and down, left and  right, steeped. I was holding on to the branches of the tree, my feet was swollen because of the hard edge sole of my sandals. My hands were dirty. And after 45 mins, I went down to the steepest cliff ever. I just jumped. Fuck whatever. When i arrived...

It was so beautiful. Hello Railay beach! I took off my shirt. Threw my bag in the sand, and lied down for 10 minutes. And then i went for a swim. When i came back. I said to them "That was fuckin' amazing guys!" I ate my lunch and smoked. We were relaxing. This is Life!

Scary but this is the experience I've been day dreaming. Later that day, they went on a hike for more to the west side of Railey to follow the German Girls. Oh yes! Germans and Swedish girls are quite popular! =) There are two sides, west and east. I didn't go with them. And told them i just want to relax in the beach as I've been stressing the past few days. That's too much trekking for me. It rained so hard later that day. They got stranded in the mountains. I got stranded in the beach as well. I want to go to Tonsai already so i can relax and have a drink. For close to two hours i was stranded in an island. I was so wet, my spare clothes are wet, my bag is wet.

After contemplating, i just paid to rent the long tail boat going back to Tonsai for 200 Baht. When i came back, i was so wet. Everyone's looking and wanting to ask me, "what did you do?" What an experience eh? I was walking towards my room. The bartenders from the Small bar told me, he saw me walking in the beach. And without my shirt on, i look like from here. That's thailand! I like it already!!!

In the Philippines, i think most of us speak with a twang. It's because most of the shows we watch and how we were taught is American influenced. And i really talk fast, so most of the time i need to make some allowance for them so they could understand. But i'm really proud i had a good education. Most of the people i met while backpacking weren't able to study. Some just finished highschool so i'm quite privileged. Thank You.

In Tonsai beach, you pay for really expensive internet, but the charging of the phone is free, the exchange rate of US dollars to Thai Baht is bad, the cigarette's almost hundred baht, a big bottle of beer is around 100 Baht but the food is ridiculously cheap yet amazing. It's awesome. And the best part is, its' only 20 Baht.

All my meals from this food stall were great; sweet and sour chicken, shrimp rice, hotdog with rice on stick (beat that), crab claws, and the lovely Banana pancakes with Nuttela.

Yes. I closed my eyes while eating this. It's that good!

My bag was washed away. Good thing, i was able to grab it right away but everything inside is wet. I grabbed my digital camera and cellphone. After a few minutes, it got to working again. Thank God! I left Tonsai beach looking like this, it's now the monsoon season, supposedly this side is free from the storm. We were wrong, it's time to leave.

So there, that's it for now. I 'll write when i remember some other things i did, whatevs. But this is really the one place i'm looking forward to going back again and again. What i liked the most is that it's compact and not so much tourists are here. There's so many amazing and friendly people you can easily talk to when you travel alone. The next time i will go here, I'll stay for a month. I am glad i started my route this way. The minute i was riding the long tail boat to Tonsai. I instantly fell in love already! And yes, no bed bugs at my hotel. I even saw a hippie mom and dad, the mom breastfeeding her baby and the dad...well smoking weed. Good gracious! Whatttahippie!

Thais are friendliest down south. Only in Tonsai, i smoked weed, drink buckets, got drunk because of Chang, and ate with locals. I tried to converse with the people. I met local Thais who seem more friendly to me than the whites. They were always asking me if i want to stay longer. I think they want to get to know me better. We're in the same continent anyway. We're both Asians. They're just curious. I was both bad and good in Thailand.
